Makenna has been in San Diego since she was a little girl. She earned her B.A. at University of California, Merced in Anthropology, having graduated in 2012 with highest honors. She was also a member of the Dean’s Honors List and Chancellor’s Honors List for academic excellence for years 2010-2012. During her time as an undergraduate, she had the opportunity to work for one of her professors in Belize for a summer. She was involved in excavating a Maya site, including temples, a ball court and a cave. While she initially thought she wanted to pursue a graduate degree in Anthropology, she decided to step away from academia to work and re-evaluate. After working in various industries, including sales and technical writing, Makenna made the decision to pursue a law degree at the University of San Diego School of Law, completing her Juris Doctor (JD) in 2020.

During her time in law school, Makenna was drawn to Trusts & Estates Law over other specialties, taking numerous elective courses focused on such. She externed with the San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program (SDVLP) in their HIV/AIDS Clinic, assisted with the Federal Tax Clinic run by the University of San Diego and clerked for a sole practitioner in estate planning and administration.

After passing the Bar exam, Makenna continued clerking for the same sole practitioner she worked for in law school before being hired by a local boutique firm in North County San Diego. She worked there for just under four years and made the decision to start her own practice in Rancho Santa Fe, CA in 2025.
